Bio:

Mr. Makin currently leads the US RWE & Epidemiology team at Boehringer Ingelheim, planning and executing integrated evidence generation for the entirety of its portfolio, in partnership with Medical Affairs, Value & Access and Clinical Development among others, to improve patient outcomes and optimize market access. Previously, he served in a dual role at Biogen, serving as both the Global Head of the HEOR, RWE & HTA team across the entirety of Biogen’s portfolio of pipeline and marketed products; and the Global Head of Value & Access for Biogen’s pipeline franchise. Before joining Biogen, Mr. Makin served as the General Manager for the world’s second-largest research group dedicated to prospective data collection at ICON; and led the team – comprised of several hundred biostatisticians, medical affairs personnel, program managers and data management professionals based in >40 countries – to the 2018 Late-Phase CRO Leadership Award. Previously, he held leadership positions in major drug commercialization companies such as IQVIA and Optum; and earlier in his career worked at the large US payers Elevance Health and Humana, where he led RWE initiatives, economic evaluations and health outcomes research studies.

Over two decades in RWE, HEOR and drug commercialization, Mr. Makin has developed and implemented drug value and effectiveness roadmaps for most of the top 25 pharmaceutical companies to improve patient access to medicines. He has served as Principal Investigator on hundreds of RWE, HEOR, public policy and market access initiatives, serves as a Keynote speaker at several conferences in the US and EU each year, and has authored over 75 peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific presentations. Mr. Makin holds a BS in Pharmacy, an MS in Pharmacy Administration, an MBA in Marketing, summa cum laude, and a Master of Management, summa cum laude; in addition to having completed an HEOR Fellowship from Humana.
